Learn How to Jump Start Your Car

Everyone faces a dead battery now and again. If you have jumper cables and another car with a working battery, you can get yourself back on the road quickly. Here's a primer on what to do.

First, park the cars with the front ends facing one another as close as possible and away from traffic. Start with both cars turned off while you determine the positive and negative terminals on both batteries. Connect the positive jumper cable to the dead battery and then to the live battery, making sure you do not touch anything metal. Then attach the negative end to the live battery and then to a metal section of the car away from moving parts. Start the engine of the good car and let it run for 1 to 2 minutes before trying to start the engine of the dead car. After a try or two, it should start.

Be sure to stop by Genesis of Amherst to have your battery checked and replaced if necessary.
